"All Schools Are Capable – The Headteacher/Principal Role"
“All Schools are Capable – The Headteacher/Principal Role” is a reference guide outlining the roles and responsibilities of school boards and teaching staff. It provides school Headteachers and Principals with access to key information on a variety of school management issues relating to a range of their responsibilities. The responsibilities within the guide are significant, however, Headteachers/Principals do not need to be experts to manage them. Help and advice are available from various sources including the Board, the KCCA Administration, Religious Councils, and the Ministry of Education.
A Board of Governors must ensure that:
Every school must have written child protection/ safeguarding policies and procedures which are ratified by the Board of Governors. The child protection policy should be reviewed annually, and parents and pupils receive a copy of the child protection policy and complaints procedure every 2 years.
A report on all child protection/ safeguarding activity must be presented, at least annually, as an agenda item to the board of Governors, to PTA, and KCCA. There must be a designated teacher (DT) and deputy designated teacher(s) (DDT) for child protection/ safeguarding in the school who form part of the school safeguarding team. The DT should also lead the review of child protection and safeguarding policies and report annually to the Headteacher/Principal.
Every school must have a Management Plan approved by the Board and KCCA Department of Education.
The Plan must provide for
The membership and procedure of the Board of Governors for the School;
The management of the School;
The functions to be exercised concerning the school by the Board of Governors, PTA committees the Headteacher/Principal;
Such other matters as are required or authorized by the Ministry of Education.
